Every year, we challenge The Joinery master builders to turn lumber leftovers into things of use and beauty. All the designs are one-of-a-kind pieces and span from coffee tables, clocks, artwork, nightstands and curio cabinets, among others.

Join us for a Design Week Portland event in conjunction with Design Museum Portland as we assemble an expert panel to discuss sustainability as a design principle. Sustainable design practices are not just a way of designing, but a way to reduce negative impacts on the environment for a better future. Designers worldwide are rapidly developing and adopting new sustainable practices and encourage the design community to learn more about the movement. We’ll cover themes such as the challenges with sustainable design, sourcing materials, upcycling and reusing materials.

We are so proud! The Joinery has been named one of the 2016 100 Best Green Workplaces in Oregon by Oregon Business magazine. The eighth annual green survey was part of the 100 Best Companies and 100 Best Nonprofits surveys conducted last fall and spring. This ranking shows that our workplace has implemented a variety of green policies, and that our employees place a high value on sustainable practices and believe our commitment to them is exceptional.

Roughly 84 percent of consumers say they try to consider a company’s social and environmental pledges before they buy or shop, according to a 2015 Cone Communications Study.

During a panel discussion held March 1st at the Joinery, a group of small business owners, startup executives and a developer grappled with the entrepreneurial challenges and opportunities of sustainability: how to define the term, obstacles to implementation and the need to catalyze a bold new era of clean, green leadership in Oregon.

The difference in price between handmade and machine-made rugs can be large, and it causes many people to opt for the cheaper machine-made variety. They argue that machine-made rugs look exactly the same as handmade despite coming with a much smaller price tag. But price isn’t the only factor setting handmade and machine-made rugs apart. They differ greatly in composition as well, displaying differences in quality of materials as well as craftsmanship.
